Johnstons Pure Vicuña Stole

Revered world-over as the finest natural material in existence, vicuña products have been sought after luxuries for generations. First introduced to the European market by Johnstons of Elgin at the 1851 Great Exhibition in London, their pure 100% vicuña stole was unlike anything on the market at the time. Weightless, warm, and unimaginably soft the popularity of vicuña among the London elite quickly grew. Native to the mountain plateaus of the Andes in South America, vicuñas exist only in the wild and cannot be bred in captivity. The high-altitude environment exposes them to bone-chilling cold, yet their outer coat is extremely thin. Each vicuña produces just about one pound of wool fiber a year and it takes all the members of several Peruvian mountain villages to catch, collect, and release them. In order to maintain its natural beauty, it is a cardinal sin to expose vicuña wool to harsh dyes or chemicals. Instead, the fiber is minimally and gently worked. Sorted by color grade and carefully spun into yarn, these women's vicuña soles and wraps are brought to life on antique knitting machines, specially calibrated for such a fine fiber. The result is a truly special vicuña accessory, without equal.
